As a technical writer using Windows authoring tools, my knowledge of any form of Macintosh was, up to last December, nil. I could make my way among files and folders, but I could not find a design paradigm, a "vision" of the user experience on Apple's operating system for its laptops and console models.

In December I gave up trying to edit video on my trusty-but-old-tech Toshiba. I wanted to use Final Cut Pro editing software, a prosumer level application written by Apple and available only on their products.

After some research I ended up purchasing a 37" iMac, loaded with the performance options I'd need to manage 12GB video files. This meant an upgrade to the i7 processor, 32MB RAM, and a 3TB Fusion drive.

Everything fit together perfectly and when I imported files I'd been editing on my Toshiba, I was amazed by how quickly the iMac could carry out system-intensive chores like rendering or applying color correction to long clips. Definitely, getting the iMac was the right move.

But I found myself floundering with actual machine operations: accessing files, creating aliases, navigating Apple's directory structure, and most of all, finding out what on earth the Finder is.

Answers did not come quickly. Nor were OS X features like the Dock, Launchpad, and Mission Control in any way instinctual to use. I finally gave up and went to Amazon, where I chose this book. I've had good luck with Dummies books in the past. The theme for the series is unfortunate: There's nothing simplistic about Dummies manuals. On the contrary, they tend to be exhaustively detailed, yet written and designed for non-technology-professionals.

This book was no exception.
