This book arrived 2 days ago - I'm a college History professor and I can tell you it is a wonderful book. The first thing is the quality of the book(Picture quality along with page quality) It is really first rate and one of the best I have seen on the war. This would make a great Christmas gift for any History lover!!

Easily as fine a collection of photography of the Great War as I have ever seen. The large format and incredible clarity bring the war to life in its many aspects. Unlike many other photographic collections, this book shows photos from many places underrepresented in other books such as Africa, the Eastern Front, and to a lesser extent, the Middle East. While there are a few photos that have received wide publication before, there are many, many more that I have never seen in other collections such as the head on view of the Seidlitz dangerously down at the bow as it limped home from Jutland. The numerous photos of shells and shell casings underscore the role played by photography as propaganda in an effort to dispel the notion of a "shell shortage" in England. The book makes one want to learn more about the photographers themselves. For example, some of the work of Frank Hurley is displayed in this book. Hurley may be better known as the photographer who documented the Shackleton Antarctic Expedition 1814-1917.
Each photo is accompanied by the name of the photographer, identity of the subject, and an accompanying text from one to several sentences that puts each of the carefully selected photos in the context of the War itself. Each chapter in the book is one year of the war and includes an overview of the year in question as well as a timeline of events. However, it is the photos themselves that leap out at the reader.
I also own the two volume set of World War I and World War II by Richard Holmes and published by the Imperial War Museum. I marveled at that collection when I first purchased it but the Holborn and Roberts volume is the one photographic history of the Great War that I treasure the most.
